The technical standard to support a business strategy of sustainable development that takes into account the economic, social and environmental context in which the community operates.
The increasingly urgent global demands on sustainability were addressed for the first time with Agenda 21 and then taken up in the 2030 Agenda in which the 17 Sustainable Development Goals programme includes the standardfor its contributionto achieving the 11 Sustainable cities and communities objective.
The management system according to ISO 37101 pursues the capacity of adaptation and resilience of the community, and of the companies operating in them, not on the basis of fixed and predetermined sustainability indicators, but in compliance with theresources, limits and needs of the specific territorial context. This will be possible by defining growthgoals, such as responsible use of resources, innovation, community health and safety, cultural identity.
The vision of sustainable development is based on the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. This standard takes a holistic approach in defining the requirements of the management system by providing guidance for a greater contribution of Organizations to sustainable development, to foster resilience and adaptability in relation to the environmental and social context on which they insist and to evaluate performance, with a view to continuous improvement.
ISO 37101 "Sustainable development in communities" sets out requirements for the determination of processes and action plans to achieve sustainability goals, offering a concrete tool to address complex phenomena that have a significant impact on communities, for example in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
