What are GRI Standards?
The GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards (GRI Standards) are a modular, interconnected system of indicators for sustainability reporting, first prepared in 2000 by the independent international nonprofit organization Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and revised on October 5, with several new features that will take effect on January 1, 2023.
In general, the new GRI standards presuppose even greater transparency and responsibility, with a clear reference to the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards).
What are the GRI Standards for?
Companies that want to start a path of sustainability need to identify and report their impacts, which are significant for the economy, the environment and the society, and they need to communicate their contribution to sustainable development.
GRI standards serve precisely as guidelines in this process.
The goal of the sustainability journey is to improve a company's positioning with its stakeholders.
Who are the stakeholders?
The definition of stakeholders has also undergone a slight revision: this term refers to all those individuals or groups, internal and external to an organization, who have an interest in it or could be affected (positively or negatively) by its activities.
Thus, the second part of the previous definition is eliminated: "entity or individual whose actions can reasonably be expected to affect the organization's ability to successfully implement its strategies and achieve its objectives."
The role of the organization in the sustainability journey becomes increasingly active and central.
Is it important to rely on expert advice in this process?
It is essential that an organisation is supported on the path to sustainability because the goals to be achieved are important and affect, as mentioned, many different realities.
In addition, the support of technical experts can help the organisation in the setting up and publication of its Sustainability Report, useful for the transparent transmission of information.
